- 2 cans (28 ounces each) San Marzano crushed tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
- Fresh basil leaves for garnish
Instructions
- In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Sautรฉ the chopped onions until translucent, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant. Stir in the San Marzano crushed tomatoes, sugar, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes.
- Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Add the dried oregano and basil, stirring well, and allow to simmer on low heat for about 30 minutes.
- Once thickened and flavors melded, taste and adjust seasoning as necessary. Your sauce is now ready!
Notes
- Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5 days in the refrigerator.
- Freeze portions for up to 3 months for future use.
- Serve over pasta, as a pizza base, or pair with grilled meats.
