Hearty French Onion Chicken Bake is a warm and savory dinner featuring tender chicken breasts topped with caramelized onions and melted cheese. Perfect for a comforting weeknight meal, this dish combines rich flavors with simple ingredients for a crowd-pleasing result.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • Fresh thyme or parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt, cooking slowly for about 20-25 minutes until they are deep golden and caramelized. Stir occasionally to prevent burning. Add minced garlic during the last 2 minutes of cooking.
  2. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Season the chicken breasts generously with salt, pepper, and dried thyme. Place them in a greased baking dish.
  3. Spread the caramelized onions evenly over the chicken breasts. Pour chicken broth into the baking dish to keep the chicken moist. Top each chicken breast with shredded cheese.
  4. Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). For a bubbly, golden top, broil for an additional 2-3 minutes.

Notes

  • Use high-quality cheese for a rich, melty topping.
  • Caramelize the onions slowly for maximum sweetness and flavor.
  • Feel free to add herbs like rosemary or thyme for extra herbaceous notes.
