- 1 lb ground beef
- 4 large potatoes, sliced thin
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 tbsp butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional: 1 tsp paprika or smoked paprika
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375ยฐF (190ยฐC). Slice the potatoes thinly and chop the onion. Mince the garlic.
- In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Add chopped onion and minced garlic, cooking until softened. Season with salt, pepper, and paprika if using. Drain excess fat and set aside.
- Grease a baking dish with butter. Layer slices of potatoes at the bottom, then spoon some of the cooked ground beef mixture over the potatoes. Repeat layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of potatoes.
- In a small bowl, mix milk and butter to create a creamy topping. Pour this mixture evenly over the casserole. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, until potatoes are tender and cheese bubbly and golden. Let rest a few minutes before serving.
Notes
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in microwave or oven until heated through. For longer storage, freeze in portions and reheat as needed.
- For added flavor, top with fresh herbs like parsley or chives before serving. Variations include substituting ground turkey or chicken, or using sweet potatoes or cauliflower slices instead of regular potatoes.
